With over 4 million products sold in over 100 countries since 1993 — functioning in some of the most extreme environments & mission-critical applications in the world — Morningstar Corporation is truly the leading supplier of solar charge controllers and inverters. Morningstar’s extensive product line covers a wide range of Current/Voc ratings and battery sizes and chemistries, as well as advanced features and certifications. The health and life of your batteries are greatly impacted by your charge controller brand. All Morningstar charge controllers support Lead-Acid batteries. Morningstar Professional Series MPPT controllers, and TriStar and ProStar (Gen3) controllers can also support Lithium, NiCd, and other battery chemistries with proper custom charge settings programming. Learn more about our PWM and MPPT solar charge controllers below.
A solar charge controller manages the flow of current and voltage from photovoltaic (PV) panels to batteries and connected loads in off-grid solar systems. Its main role is to charge batteries safely without overcharging, which helps extend their lifespan. Using a low-quality controller can result in battery damage and system failure. These devices are also known as solar charge regulators.
In off-grid setups, solar charge controllers keep batteries charged at an optimal level without overcharging, preventing gassing and damage to the battery. This extends battery life. They also ensure that the current and voltage supplied match the rated capacity of the loads. Without a charge controller, the PV array could deliver excessive power, potentially damaging batteries and connected equipment.
When selecting a solar charge controller, it must support your load’s power needs, battery voltage, and the current and voltage from your PV array. You should also consider if you require additional features such as low voltage disconnect, lighting control, or specific certifications. Factors like your location’s climate, the type of solar modules you use, and cost will influence whether a PWM or MPPT controller is best. A knowledgeable solar provider can assist you in sizing and configuring your system components for optimal performance.
The durability of a charge controller varies based on the brand and environmental conditions. For example, Morningstar’s Professional Series controllers come with a 5-year warranty, and many units have been reliably operating for over a decade.
Morningstar controllers use a high-frequency design that enables faster response to changing conditions, resulting in greater efficiency across a broad range of power levels. Their MPPT controllers include TRAKStar technology, which rapidly scans the entire current-voltage curve, maximizing energy capture better than competing products.
